We first heard Rose mention her pen-pal in the second season finale. She’s a little behind writing back, because she’s stuck on a few things. Maybe you can give her advice?
We continue the story of Out With Dad through Rose’s video diaries while we raise funds and prepare our third season production schedule.
This minisode was first available to our supporters who are members of our VIP Out With Dad private Facebook group. It went live to the public on February 14th, 2013. To find out how you can watch episodes three weeks early, visit outwithdad.com/contribute for details.

Snail mail? That sounds funny.
Not telling others that you are gay doesn’t mean that you are homophobic. It just means that you FEAR homophobic reactions.
I think the same thing.
no you no rose if you like vanessa or the outher girl
Having second thoughts about who to come out to is a normal thing. I have been out to my family for a year now and have been in a relationship with my amazing girlfriend for a year and a half. Each day there is something new or a different situation where you have to come out all over again. Once you become comfortable with yourself it will become easier each time one of those situations happens. Sometimes when it is a person that you being out to wont really change your relationship there might not be a need to tell them until they ask or a time like the one in the video. In your own time it will become second nature to say my girlfriend/boyfriend. Try not to confuse insecurities and hesitation with self hate because self hate won’t go away but those insecurities and hesitation with time will fade away and things will become much easier. Hope this helps someone!
I am often to blogging and i actually respect your content. The article has actually peaks my interest. I am going to bookmark your web site and preserve checking for new information.
No i dont think u are ur just afraid of wat others will say u will come out wen u. Want <3:)
So it has been a few years since I came out and Bi-sexual and I recall talking about my first girlfriend in gender neutral terms, in fact talk about most relationships of mine from the past or that I am getting into, I still use gender neutral terms. It becomes a second nature thing. I don’t think it makes “us” (those who do that) homophobic. For me it is not that I am scare of homosexuals and that I am homosexual but unfortunately it is one of those things that is done as protection, a defense mechanism, if you will. I hate that I still do it and I have been out to most of the people in my life for years. however it is still a concern for the others, and specially at work (or when I was in school)
I really know how Rose feel, but she’s not homophobic I think. Just afraid. A few weeks ago, me and my friends were jocking about chemistry, because we talked about ‘homogeneously’ and ‘heterogeneous’… Then one of them asked me “what is your sexual orientation?” I just said “I… am … undefinable…?” I’m a bit depressiv (okay…very depressiv^^) and when I talk to my mom, when i feel lonely, and think I never found someone and nobody loves me, I can’t say “I’ll never found a girlfriend” sometimes I say boyfriend, even I don’t want a boyfriend, just in order to avoid complications…
But in my class, some girls are really homophobic…well, all the girls I talked to… When I did an ‘allusion’ they just said “urg Anni, are you a lesbian? Omg I don’t hope so! They are so disgusting” That makes me sad and so uneasy… ://
Sorry, that I share my problems here, I’m really sorry! (Sorry for my bad english btw…)
Will there be subtitles? I’m a young german girl, my english is not good enough 😛
Okay, now I can understand the most^^
To the Character and any person interested :
Partner, significant other, soulmate, someone to love who love you back, your half.
Their are a lot of words that are more suitable to describe the person you’re with than “boyfriend” or “girlfriend”. Also I think it’s relevant to be gender neutral, I think it would be better to at some point use the name of the person you’re with. When you have a friend with whom you share a lot of yourself, it will be perceived as a betrayal if you keep secret something that is really important to you. And be patient with your friends.
Good luck.
And fearing to be rejected by someone because they MIGHT not be okay with your sexual orientation is more Heterophobic than homophobic…
i can’t see the video and it is february 14th it says the video isn’t avalible, i really love this series!! can’t wait for season 3!! and i love the video diarys
i think the whole issue of homophobia is complicated. I find different things offensive me personally than would maybe be offensive to someone else and vice versa. For example i have a friend who is christian and her views are like those of thep stereotypical christian. That being gay is not accepted by God. However this is not offensive to me. She doesnt disagree with being gay just because she doesnt like them. her belief is that you shouldn’t have sex before marriage abd that marriage is between a man and a woman and so following this 2 people of the same sex shouldn’t be in a sexual relationship. but though this is her belief she would never go to an anti gay rally or be abusive to people on the street. she knows that these are her own personal views and she doesn’t force them on anyone and so in return i don’t try to change her views as everyone is entitled to their own opinion. what does get me upset as i walk around college is the casual use of homophobic slurs. in lessons i hear all the time phrases like ‘this is so gay’ and people calling people gay because they didnt gi to a party and stuff like that. this is why s02e03 was so helpful to me. in maths t day we even brought it up as a subject. the teacher was disscussing how the meaning of the word has changed and how it is used so casually. my teacher was also surprised that he too had also started to use the word in this way due to hearing it in the classroom. he often in lesson also uses the word gay to mean happy as it used to which of course made people laugh at first but now they are much more aware of what they say in the class as the teacher will call it out which is a start. the reason i think these slurs upset me though is because they show the person who uses them, in someway sees homosexuality as a bad thing and this makes it much harder to be out as you think no one will accept you for who you are. anyway is was my rant. sorry i will now let you get on with your day.

No, I don’t think you’re homophobic. You are afraid of what a homophobic person could say or do to you. I don’t know if this exists, but… you are homophobic-phobic. And it’s totally normal (I still am, and I’m 26…). And you don’t have to tell you have a girlfriend, just like straight girls don’t have to tell they have a boyfriend. They just do tell because it’s easy and they don’t have to care about judgements. We have to be more careful, because we don’t know how will a person react.
Noy, you’re not. You’re just extremely self-conscious (in the way that you fear rejection. Do you say it that way?!). So, for being homphobic you would rather be afraid of homosexual people and not just be afraid of being out or outed. So yeah, you’re closeted (And I’m just realizing I was like answering to a natural person. Way too caught up in this story, your fault!!!), but what does it matter? (Now I’m talking ABOUT Rose, not TO Rose….) The pen pal lives in Great Britain, she’s never met her before. Odds are she won’t ever meet her. I can’t talk about experience, because I was never constantly pen paling. I’m an awful pen paler, cause I just mess around with the writing back part and don’t get it straight. Whatever. I think that since I became older and something like more mature, I was not so afraid of being rejected. but since Rose is still goung through the CO part, it’s natural to be rather confused and afraid. I remember that I also had huge difficulties with saying “girlfriend”, which lies in the way of the German “Freundin” which means both: (female) friend and girlfriend as well. So yeah. I get her point, but being homophobic is a totally other issue, it’s not what she’s afraid of.
I’m kinda bubbling. Am I not?
Seriously? I love your work!
<3
Big hugs. Also for the School-dance episode!!
Damned, it sometime so frustating !! In french, we don’t have a specific word for girlfriend. We use “Copine” but like “Freudin” it mean both friend or girlfriend. (“Petite amie” is less ambiguous but really chilldish) One Time, I wanted to say that i have a girlfriend but it’s too strange to say ” Hello ! I’am gay and I have a girlfriend !”. So, when the conversation turned in my favor, i said :” Hey, I have seen this movie with my “copine” for our first date.
But no one understood.–‘
ps:forgive me for killing the English language.
Im my opinion, homophobia is an unreasonable discomfort or fear towards homosexuality. So one’s feelings of anxiety from what another person may or may not think of one’s sexuality are not homophobic. Just my two cents.
I loved this video, and I love that all the videos bring about a lot of great discussion topics.
