Despite having found a place to take refuge, Vanessa is still very lost. She’s scared, and the people she encounters aren’t making her situation any better. Meanwhile, her parents are feeling lost too – doing all they can to find her, despite the pain it causes.
This is the second episode of Vanessa’s Story, the spin-off of Out With Dad shot in secret while filming the rest of season three. Vanessa’s Story episodes run in parallel to Out With Dad‘s episodes.

I wrote some thoughts about this episode: https://fedscomic.blogspot.com/2014/06/reviews-vanessa-alone-and-vanessa-lost.html
Outstanding review as always Steven!
Looking back at “Outed”, Vanessa sorta comes out to Kenny. She can be with Rose behind her parents’ backs, but…she…can’t…be…with her. In “Chemistry with Vanessa”, Vanessa has made her decision about really loving Rose. In “Having it Out”, Vanessa is so upset, so scared, at thought of maybe being gay. She can’t fathom what her mom will do. Right before she runs away, she tells her parents that she just wants to be herself, which mom replies that to live there, she cant be gay. Vanessa is so distraught about all of this, she sees no way out out… out.
Being a father and Catholic, I can see her parents’ (MOM!!!) point of view, at least a little. Mom is more concerned about her standing in the community and Church than her daughters true happiness. I see this in parents fairly often. I feel so sorry for Vanessa.
When you filmed the 1st part, I am second guessing that Kayla and Vanessa went all the way (“can’t we just do this”), Vanessa’s “first time,”. Tracy certainly insinuates it. Had the camera pulled back to show either girl starting to remove a shirt, that would have spoken volumes. Then you cut to Vanessa waking up in the morning, after Kayla stole her cellphone. Kayla is a user.
I forgot to add… I would never treat either daughter of mine this way. I am much more like Nathan; I just want them to be happy, and would completely accept them if either came out. I believe that someone’s sexuality is from birth. No one can “choose” to be LGBT. Their only choice is to be in or out.
I feel the same way. I don’t think you chose to be LGBT you are just born this way. Poor Vanessa though :'( I feel soo bad for her, because her mum won’t accept her :'( I hope Rose and Vanessa get together 😀
I can sort of relate to Vanessa. My parents are not homophobic or extremely religious, but like Vanessa I don’t know what I am. I’m only 13 but I’m starting to question what I am. I’ve never been attracted to boys, but I have had ‘girl crushes’ on celebrity’s (e.g. Naya Rivera, Megan Fox). But I’m trying not to get worked up about it. But I do wish that I knew what I was.
Vanessa’s Story is exactly the dosage of realism the show needed. Coming out is entirely different for everyone and it is very hard at any age, even for those who know at a young age but say nothing until they are older.
So many teens face the problem of their own sexuality and receive the very same reaction from their parents. Shows like these should be presented on every possible media to create a conscience in people. Being gay, bi, trans or whatever is the equivalent of being born with brown, green or blue eyes, sure you can change them but the change will always only be temporarily. I wish people could understand this!!!!!!
I love this show and I am proud of who I am.
When exactly the episode will be avaible in France4. I love this show. I stamp. PLEASE!
I’m curious as to why you decided to deviate from the conversation largely about gay and lesbian issues, and talk about bi-erasure and biphobia in the show. Don’t get me wrong, because I love someone finally addressing it in a positive way. I still remember the Sex in the City episode where the four main characters just trashed on the concept of bisexuality. But I was curious about the creative decision there. Where did the idea come from?
Actually, the decision was made long ago, before we even started filming Season One. Between Lindsey and I, we’ve always known that Vanessa is bisexual – but Vanessa hadn’t figured it out herself yet. It’s been a long journey for her to finally reach this conclusion.
If you listen carefully to what she says to Rose at her front door in episode 2.03, you’ll get a hint of that confusion.
i love this show already i can’t wait for the next eps!!!
Kayla… I tough she was nice, but she seems like a real bitch… Tracey seems nice, however.
This spin off is much grittier and dark than out with dad (which can at times be quite cheesy)… Never thought you guys would show people casually fucking each other..but it was very realistic. My favourite part is when the girl is venting and Vanessa realises that all those things are what she did to Rose – very powerful and effective.
This show means a lot to people…
But it is still annoying for me that there is still a very stereotypical gay ‘comjng out story’ represented by the media. I guess it’s because it applies to the vast majority. But sometimes being gay is harder than ‘what OTHER people will think’… What about the people who hate THEMSELVES regardless of all the people who will accept their sexuality. The people who lose their faith and go their whole thinking life that homosexuality is morally wrong and therefore spending their whole life hating their inadequate selves. Those people WANT to be able to rewire their conscience because it would be so much easier then…but they can’t. They can’t reinvent the God they know…his principles unchanging.
My mother is crazy about me. She loves me so much and would never want to lose me. She tells me she’s proud of me. STILL she believes homosexuality is wrong and split me from my best friend who I was in love with. She’ll never change her views on homosexuality and sexual sin, she’ll never condone same sex relationships. But she isn’t like Vanessa’s mother either. She is not cold and ‘afraid’ of homosexuality. She didn’t get upset when I told her the truth…she told me she loved me. Still, she tore me away from my soulmate..there was no choice.
First, this is meant as a compliment. I don’t know if I can watch all of Vanessa’s Story, it is just so intense.
Really loved this episode!! I also made a edit on Vanessa’s Realisation here!!

I LOVE Vanessa’s story line. I also love that it’s shot in black and white. I feel it captures the tone of her situation. And I’m glad you’re telling her story. I was homeless off and on my senior year of HS, and it’s a story that’s not told enough.
So basically Tracey is Rose without the awesome support system of Nathan, Kenny, and Claire (as well as a few others whose names I’ve forgotten)? And Vanessa is only now realizing how crappy she’s treated Rose via Tracey’s story, too. I really feel bad for Tracey. Like so many other young people in her position she would’ve thrived like Rose had if not for her lack of a good support system of friends and family. Of course that’s one thing that Vanessa has in common with Tracey, the lack of support from her loved ones. Hope to see more of Tracey and, of course, Vanessa. I also hope that Vanessa gets out of that sketchy house like Tracey suggested before something truly f-up happens to her. Get out of that place and sneak over to Rose soon, Vanessa! And take Tracey with you!
…great, now I’m pleading with fictional characters again.
Anyhow, can’t wait to see what happens next!
Beautiful episode! You guys are amazing.
it was good seeing tracey basically telling vanessa that she ( tracey )is in the same boat as Rose and vanessa now knowing what she has done to Rose as tracey’s love did the same crappy thing to her what vanessa’s done to rose , i still hope that Kayla hasnt stolen the phone and is going to use it instead and call vanessa’s parents or rose to get them to come and get her , as i felt that if kalya was going to rob her why take her to your home first
i feel so bad for Vanessa esspecially when she relized what she did to Rose. im really afriad of what Kyle is gonna do to her. i hope she ends up ok but she was so freakin adorable even just the way she said certain things. Good luck Vanessa.
This episode was fantastic!
i love the story line it is so catch and you can never predict the ending which is good. The only problem is that i dont like it in black an white. I prefer it in colour as it will make people want to watch more
I totally understand what you’re saying about it not being in colour as I would also like it in colour but it is in black and white because all the life is drained out of Vanessa and that is emphasized by it being in black and white. But I still agree with you!
I’m agreement with both statements, however I feel black and white is a little too far, maybe very faint colour would be as emotive and provide the colour vision that people recognize.
I’m hoping and praying nothing bad happens to Vanessa. But from the trailer, it looks like that Kyle guy is going to try to rape her. 🙁 I hope it’s an almost thing and not something that actually happens to her. The girl is always messed up from struggling to be a bisexual and having her parents deny her from being herself (been there – it sucks). The last thing she needs is have more crap on her plate to deal with.
But, glad to see the dad finally willing to stand up to his wife for the sake of keeping his child. She already drove off two of their three kids because of her being a bigot. The first time because her son married a muslim woman (or something like that – either way she was from a different religion) and her daughter because she was in love with a girl. Either way he was losing his kids because of her. Good to now see, at least now, he’s not taking it anymore.
I have been watching out with dad since the very beginning, infact i have watched the entire series more than once and some episodes multiple times. Growing with the characters i have come to love them like i know them in real life. This episode brought me to tears though i could never feel like anything was roses faulty, neither could i ever wish that she would leave Claire for Vanessa though if it did happen i would be all for it. I wouldn’t ever be able to see Clair upset though. How could Out With Dad ever end with everybody being happy? thank you sooooo much Jason and everybody else involved, Out With Dad has changed the lives of many young people out there like me positively. Im from England and in a massive fan, that just shows how global you are! All the luck and love to you in Canada and again a massive thankyou from me x
I totally agree 100% since the every first episode all the way to now out with dad is my life and i don’t know what i would do with it LOVE YOU OWD <3
Ikr, this is the best series ever, thank you Out With Dad.
Pire bien cet épisode ! Coucou depuis la Suisse
This episode made me frozen, really.
Iwant to thank to Out With Dad production and actors, because all episode, especially, parent’s scene was as similar as daily people situations lives nowadays.
It is difficult to face something simple but complicated to the rest, even when a person who says is a adolescent.
Rewards 🙂
Really gritty episode! Loved how the description of the blow off was Vanessa doing that to Rose…not Rose to Vanessa. GO HOME Vanessa – back to Rose!
Vanessa’s father is actually heartbreaking. So real… it would be wonderful if other parents’ eyes were opened like this.
Vanessa realizing what she has done to Rose was heartbreaking.
this is not fair, i’m french so i can’t see it 🙁
We’re sorry about that. You’ll get your chance to see it once France Television gets the episodes from us!
When?
I love this show, and like the others i can’t wait 😉
And in France, the first is not avaible yet, so for le season 3…

Thank you for another home run episode, they are life changing for me and I would imagine others too.
i like so much this web serie….because it”s interesting…
Soo good!!!! Poor Tracy.
POWERFUL. Congrats!
Omg no please get Vanessa out of that house and away from these people. Don’t like to see Vanessa getting hurt. Love the other part about her parents and them saying that she’s welcome no matter what.
I just love your work!! You help other to feel we are not alone. Thanks!!
