Sometimes people say things they don’t realize are mean or hurtful. According to numerous sources, the average teenager hears 26 homophobic slurs in a day. Often, these things are said by our friends, classmates, family members. To Rose, comments like these ring louder than ever now that she’s out to herself and to a select few. What if coming out all the way out makes it even worse? What if she’s singled out because she’s gay? Is this what Vanessa is so afraid of? Is that why she’s behaving the way she has been? Questions like these can be overwhelming.
Meanwhile, at home, Nathan has an unexpected encounter – which might have devastating consequences.

This is a good show, it is an eye opening for the society… Will Colon is a great actor… Really a great one, I hate vanessas’ mom really
it curious to know that before i accepted i was gay i really didn’t notice when people said something about someone gay, and if i did i wouldn’t make much of it; i would get maybe a little mad but didn’t dig into it… but once i accepted it its like everyone around me does it…and it stopped bugging me and started hurting… and i’m in the closet so.. its kinda hard to hear it from friends who actually know that i’m gay…
I know this is a late comment compared to the others, but I just got around to watching the episode, and I wanted to say two things about how it touched amazingly close to my life:
1. My father experienced almost the exact same thing that Rose’s dad experienced when Vanessa’s mom came over. Replace the face-to-face visit with a phone call during a big family party and replace a budding relationship with a year long relationship after years of being best friends, and you’ve got it. Just like in the episode, I was accused of being the “bad influence” and causing the daughter to be gay. I truly feel for Rose’s dad here because it is a nearly impossible situation. You want to defend your child, but at the same time try to turn those angry feelings away from the other parents’ own child. I lost my best friend because of her parents. I hope the same doesn’t happen here.
2. I am currently a teacher at a high school, and I can say that the statistic about homophobic remarks is both staggering and unsurprising (although they seem to be opposites, they aren’t). Occasionally a student will slip up and say one of those slurs in my hearing and it cuts really, really deep. Feeling that hatred and ignorance in the environment is stifling and it hurts. It is my job (and all of our jobs) to bring this issue to light and once and for all stop the comments. At times I still feel the fear and silence of my own closeted teenage self getting in the way, but shows like this help me to remember what I am trying to accomplish.
This episode — these scenes in particular — were beautifully acted and really heart-wrenching for me. Rarely does a show of any kind come this close to my reality. Thank you!

Gosh! I’m so glad that I never came out during my school years and never had to meet such crazy parents like Vanessa’s mum. Vanessa really should stand up to her mum – sometimes you’ve to turn the tables and bring up your parents as you want them to be, worked for me up to a certain point at that age 😉
Might we see the bathroom schoolmate again in later episodes? Thought for a moment that… 🙂

I’m glad to see the episodes, and look forward to more interaction between Vanessa’s mother and father, and to finding out more about Vanessa’s feelings towards her own sexuality, and her friendship with Rose.

This is by far the most painful thing I’ve ever subjected myself to, not only was it terrible acting and poorly written but the most boring thing I’ve ever been forced to watch……..Mr. Lemay looks like death…I thought I was watching a zombie sitcom, your daughter is gay get over it..holy over dramatic, the acting sucks!!!! Please people dont quit your day jobs! Or retire early….
rude. if you don’t like it then don’t watch it. This series isn’t just for entertainment, it adresses important issues, inside and out — we can’t rely on shows like Glee for everything…

After watching/reading comments, I completely agree this is a well done episode. Great acting, writing, and music. You know things are going to get more serious when parents start getting involved. Also, I agree that its time for Rose to get a break. She needs some cheering up. And I want an update on Kenny’s new relationship too, eventually 🙂

I keep re-watching this episode and each time I see it again, it just gets better and better. I really think it is by far the best of the entire series so far; it’s so close to the bone, the music is fantastic and not to mention the stunning performances from the main trio. Without a doubt my favourite.
Kate Conway’s performance as Rose in this episode was just so stunning. I think I can easily say that every single person who watched this episode was really moved by the range of emotions that we saw the character going through. It’s easy to act happy or angry or sad or any emotion you can think of, but when you truly are portraying the emotion, to a point where it is like you are genuinely feeing it? That’s difficult, and I heartily congratulate Kate for that amazing performance.
Lindsey Middleton’s performance was also fantastic in this. We really had a chance to see past the mask that Vanessa has put up in front of her true emotions. It was a brilliant moment of the villain/victim technique. Well done. That scene on the doorstep had me in tears because of how true Lindsey’s portrayal of a girl in that situation was. It really affected me. That moment with the outburst about how she’s NOT gay, asserting it to herself, trying to make herself believe that she is normal because she is so scared of what will happen… gosh, I had shivers down my spine. That is easily my favourite moment of the entirety of Out With Dad… except for perhaps the first conversation in the first episode 🙂
And not to forget Will Conlon’s performance as Nathan! A truly brilliant performance. I have always like the character of Nathan; how understanding he is and how he and Rose have such a comfortable relationship. Nathan was put in to a very difficult situation in this episode which he handled the same way as any other parent like him would have, especially as Vanessa’s mum was acting like she already knew. It wasn’t his fault he outed Rose and Vanessa; it was a pure accident. I think Will acted brilliantly, especially in the moments when he was alone onscreen after Vanessa’s mom’s confrontation and the confrontation with Rose. We saw the vulnerability of the character and it really reached out to me. Brilliant work, Will, brilliant.
All in all, an absolutely fabulous episode in an absolutely brilliant webseries. Congratulations to everyone on this particularly superb piece of work.

It gives me great pride to hear someone mention Vanessa’s mask. I think you’re the first to ever say anything about it. This is what I looked for back in February of 2010 when we were doing auditions, and very few actors were able to pull this off. In a way, I was looking for an actor who could play a character who was “acting”. Lindsey and I are so pleased that we finally get to material where she can throw away that mask and be they real Vanessa (although, she go to do that a bit in “Party Out” last year).

At 6:55 Rose says to Vanessa “You’ve always known”. Always known what? That Rose was a lesbain?
I think Rose was implying that Vanessa has always known she’s gay. This line was also a surprise to me because I didn’t think that fact had really ben clarified before. Vanessa may have kissed Rose but that doesn’t mean shes 100% gay. mind boggling…
I’m gay and my parents know this, but they pretend that nothing is overlooked, it’s just a phase and I would someday become “normal” (ha-ha)

Kate: lo has bordado (not sure it would make much sense in English, sorry, but it’s a compliment, I swear). Subtle body language, little gestures and looks… you are mastering little things many “mature” actresses can’t get right! And as someone said already, you do have a pretty voice.
Great episode in a great series. I am glad I found you when the whole season one was out. This wait is killing me! Hopefully my fish memory helps forgetting about it after a few days.
I can see the disaster coming if it were real life. If they start anything Rose is going to get a really bad heart break and the friendship will suffer. That monster-mum is too real and too powerful. I have seen it at work in “independent” adults.
I add my vote to the crowd: something should happen with the sweet girl in the restroom. Rose doesn’t even know her name and she has treated her better than her best-friend-ever Vanessa in the whole series. Rose should go for her (those eyes were saying something!). Vanessa would be jealous for a while, but their friendship can survive that. Rose deserves more (and we want to see Kate playing happy for a while!).
Yep, it would have been sweet had Vanessa followed her, but she didn’t: lost chance. Rose was very brave to go to her again, and she let her down once more dealing with monster-mum. It has to suck being her, by the way. Congrats to the actress for making her so real. Cool close-ups, director. They definitely get the emotions high.

I love playing Theresa Lemay. She comes across as you say as a “monster Mom” but she does love her family. I am very proud of this series and honoured to work with the amazing cast and crew.

Yes, the “Monster-Mum” character is amazing. I read that Jason found her a challenge to write, but I like how he has written her words so that they could apply to her (“my daughter is not the problem” and “sort yourself out and gain some perspective”). Very clever.
I do believe that Mrs. LeMay loves Vanessa and wants what she thinks is best for her. She starts off in the vein of a “modest propsal” (calling to mind the work of Jonathan Swift) with valid concerns about Vanessa’s attitude and grades etc. I look forward to seeing where Jason takes Mrs. LeMay and how Wendy interprets her.
You make a good point, Wendy: she does it all out of love. I guess I used the metaphor too lightly even though it was just a comment on a blog. My apologies. I think Theresa reminds me way too much somebody very real I met long time ago and that makes it difficult for me to feel any empathy for her own struggle.
I always assume that everybody, no matter how awful the results, has good intentions when doing something. Most of the issues we deal with every day are miss-communications, differences in priorities and lack of taking the time to actually explain why you do what you do or, from the other side, to ask for clarifications. In this case the problem, as I see it, is that Theresa is defending her idea of family, not her family. She is loving her idea of Vanessa, not the real Vanessa. She has already “lost” a son (and I am trying to trace that back through the story but I think you need to give us more info there, director!) and she is scared to her bones that the same might happen with her little girl. But she is totally missing the point here…
Love has many faces and there are many ways in which love can be as destructive as any other not-so-nice feeling. Theresa’s attitude is among the most destructive I have ever experienced, probably because it’s directed towards someone who needs to love her and respect her.
Congrats to you all for your work. I think this series would be a great starter for conversations around these issues in high-schools. I hope you are thinking about establishing some collaborations on that respect.

Yeah true.. like 10 or so years ago I told her I kinda liked girls then she freaked out and started crying she didnt speak to me for 2 days then I just told her i was kidding just wanted to see her reaction. And I didnt like it so i cried. So ever since then just been keeping it a secret. some close friends know but thats it.. Really hard to meet girls her around my area. No gay hangouts you have to drive like 30 to an hour away to meet girls..

Este episodio fue muy emotivo para mi aunque yo no he pasado por algo asi creo que no me gustaria estar en el lugar ni de Rose ni de Vanessa, me dieron muchas ganas de llorar, por cierto las actrices principales Kate y Lindsey wow tienen una quimica increible y estan haciendo una maravillosa actuacion y que decir del resto de los actores son realmente buenos gracias por estar en este proyecto, seria maravilloso poder conocer a cada uno de ustedes lastima que vivo muy lejos, Mexico 🙂

Anyway, everyone did an amazing job in this, the writing and choice of words, especially the ones Vanessa’s mom uses, are written really well (the whole “confused little girl” thing had a bit of an impact on me *shivers*). The acting in this was exceptional with so much emotion. Thank you for this episode and can’t wait to see the next!
I think those words spoken by Vanessa’s mom will have a long lasting impact on Rose.
Amazing episode. Anyone in school, from elementary to post secondary, hears comments such as those repeatedly on a daily basis. It can certainly be overwhelming.
A note regarding production: cinematography is fantastic, but please don’t use wipes where they don’t work; it takes a away from the feel and, in this episode especially, I don’t want to be distracted from the story.

This episode had a second cinematographer working on it. Bruce William Harper shot the first and last scenes, I think he did an amazing job.
I like the wipes! But, I am a Star Wars fan, and that’s where I got the inspiration from. I hope you don’t mind – but there’ll still be some more in the future!
Bruce certainly did an amazing job; his touch added a lot to the atmosphere of those scenes.

I’m endlessly astounded by how well these episodes are shot, written and acted. I understand that Vanessa is scared and that she definitely has reason to be with how her mother is, it’s just heartbreaking to see Rose cut down like that. That girl who talked to Rose in the bathroom was cute and kind. Maybe Rose should be with her (this is me hoping she’s gay). At least for the moment. Sometimes, you have to see the person you love with someone else to give you the courage to do something about it.
Ow such a strong episode. Really amazing. I have to say I love this web series, it’s so great. Great actors so emotional. I’m always amazed when I watched the episodes. Absolutely Amazing real world portrayal . I lived through what Rose is going through now, and i can say from experience this is the most accurate I have ever seen something like this shown anywhere. I really hope to see something happening with the girl in the bathroom, it really looked like you guys are setting something up since Kenny will likely be busy with his budding relationship with Alicia. I believe the statistic is for US teenagers, though I also read this in Canadian literature as well. I’m sure it varies from in city to city and country to country. To me, the important thing is for everyone to realize that some things aren’t meant to be homophobic – but they are. That’s why I chose the dialog very carefully.
I think you’ll reallyenjoy the next episode, despite how short it will be.

Wow, I haven’t expected Mr. SuperDad to make such a huge mistake. I am really disappointed with Nathan right now. Never ever out people without their knowledge or permission. Actually, that’s common sense, but still many people do it wrong.
26 homophobic slurs a day – that’s a shockingly high number. I know how Rose feels when she hears all this crap. In my case, it’s not classmates who do that, but my father. Heteronormative people really have no clue how much such words hurt.
It’s wonderful to see so many real life issues included in the series. That creates a lot of teachable moments.
It feels important to us to try and touch these kinds of issues as much as possible, hopefully without being too preachy.
Nathan sure screwed up. I don’t think he meant it. He sure won’t do it again!

This is an amazing episode! Every single part was intriguing, especially the part where Rose and Vanessa are at the door agreeing to disagree to get closure. I also loved the part and what made me aw’d was that scene where Rose tells Vanessa she loves her 🙂

The scene when Theresa was talking (i don’t know if that can be called talking, though) with Nathan felt/looked just like when my teacher (a nun -catholic all girl school-) was “talking” to me about me and ex. She just shouted those things to me, without even looking me in the eye… then called my parents and my exes parents and outed us… was awful when i got home that day. But, i think that’s just how life is. We have to be strong and wait, thing will get better, just have to have a little faith in yourself and the people around you. 🙂
I just love Kate’s voice, hearing her just makes me so happy hahaha !

I have to say it’s so beautiful to see that Rose has the character (no pun intended) to confront Vanessa about the fact that she hurt her feelings. In life, when our friends or partners hurt us we don’t always have the guts to say ‘hey, that hurt my feelings.’ cuz it puts us in a vulnerable place. You don’t want to be hurt again, so it’s easy to shy away from it. It shows Rose’s strong character to stand up for herself and her relationship with Vanessa.
Such a great episode. 🙂

Wow…. just wow… This episode was really amazing. The way how Vanessa’s mom talked to Nathan was so sick and blind, like she was numb or something. It is really sad that there is, in fact, a lot of people like her.
I just felt like I was going to burst into tears while watching Rose and Vanessa’s scene, and then, when Vanessa’s mom appeared and said those things, I just couldn’t hold it any longer… Excellent acting, it felt so real!

oh and i fogot, The episode was really strong. it addressed major issues that are in our society and you handled it so well. i am speechless. (also, i suppose our societys are different because i’m in australia, but we have the same issue over here.)
This episode is amazing. It would have to be one of the best.
It was so emotional (and didn’t seem at all fake) for the characters and the closeness of the camera made it all so much more intense and we as an audience could really feel and connect to what the characters were going through/ feeling. Actors did an amazing job and can i just mention the music in the episode. It was freaking fantastic! It made the whole episode super intense and it really set the mood of the episode. It worked so well and made the episode have such an impact on me. favorite use of music so far i would have to say. This was a really fantastic episode. It’s really blew me away. So thankyou, thankyou so so much.

That’s was the most intense episode ever. It got me tearing.
It was amazing and strong, hard to watch. I can relate to that feeling when Rose is listening to all this coments in class, so homofobic, so casual, and you feel like you want to run away from the room. The process of coming out is exhausting, is scarry, because is your own life, your own person which is being exhibit out there for every one to see, and talk and judge. For so many people you become an unidimensional being who is just gay, nothing else matters, not your history, not your accomplishments, nothing. Very well depicted.
I was so mad with the father, I get it that it must be hard what he is going through but he had no right to out her, he had no right to open his mouth. Its so infuriating, because the outing process is hard enough, to have the extra punch of your father outing you to the castrating mother of your love interest. Its just too much.

This was truly an amazing episode. The acting and telling of the story is emotional and really gets through. I love it!

I’m half way through the episode and I’ve had to stop. Not because there’s something wrong with the episode, mind you. It’s note-perfect. It’s just such a sucker punch. I knew the scene with Nathan and Theresa was coming, but still, it just hit me so hard.
Not being a parent, I have trouble identifying with the urge to mold my children into little mirror images of me, but it has to be said that the kind of blind, unthinking intolerance exhibited by people such as these–and I know they’re out there–is just so hard to accept. How can anyone love someone so much and still refuse to see them for who they are, or at least might be? In my mind, that’s not love at all.
So yeah, I’m gonna have to come back and finish watching the episode tomorrow. Please don’t be offended or concerned. some things hit me pretty heavily some days. Look at it as a testament to the gravity you’ve invested in this episode.

This is without a doubt your best episode yet- excellently written and so well acted! It dealt with some very real issues (as always) and it was really effective and emotional. I really hope the girl in the bathroom comes back in some capacity for Rose, clearly she could use a friend right now! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for making this series, it means a lot to me and I’m sure to many other people.
